Odontocetes fall into the monophyodont and homodont groups of dentitions. This means they do not have a primary precursor to their permanent teeth and all the teeth have the same form and function.
These simple dentitions can suffer traumatic injuries and degenerative changes which can lead to life threatening infections if allowed to go untreated.
